It would be cool if it was possible to execute a state in the background so one could keep working.

I especially use this a lot when it comes to caching.

I guess you are talking about caching in Houdini?

For Mantra renderings this is already implemented. Not all ROPs support this, but I could add it for all caching ROPs, which have this feature.
